Nucleo familiar alex gray11/29/2023 Each individual hair in each brushstroke seems to have been accentuated through black dry-brushing, or under-painting, or sanding-through, in contrast to the smooth and wet-looking strips on top. Frequently listed in her media, along with oil paint and linen, is modelling paste – indicating that the paintings are more fastidiously fabricated than their gestural surfaces might sometimes imply.įurthermore, the ground on which they sit, which consists of an even field of brushstrokes curving in all directions (another Olson trademark, perhaps lifted from domestic wall textures of the 1970s) is uncannily tidy. Certain things about them do not quite add up. And yet there is something about Olson’s paintings that is a little too perfect to be taken at face value. The mark seems to tell us everything we could want to know about the texture of oil paint: its viscosity, its speed, its consistency – all this information is readily available on the surface. It appears in a great many of her paintings, including a number of works in her ‘Proposal’ series (2012): a squeegeed strip of colour, immaculately smooth except at its tail end where a curling crest of paint betrays where the artist lifted her tool from the canvas. She is the co-founder with Anderson of Bloody Scotland, Scotland's first international crime writing festival, which takes place in Stirling. Gray is a member of the Femmes Fatales crime writing trio, together with Alanna Knight and Lin Anderson. Thereafter, she continued teaching in Scotland until the 1990s, when she began to write full-time. In 1976, she lived in Rhodesia for three months, during which time she married. She worked for a period in the Department of Health & Social Security, before training as an English teacher. She studied English and Philosophy at Strathclyde University and was a founding member of Battlefield Band. Her father was a telecommunications engineer and her mother, originally from Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, was a telephone exchange operator. She has also published magazine articles, poetry and short stories as well as stories for BBC radio schools programmes.Īlex Gray (born Sandra Gray Lang) was brought up in the Craigbank area of Glasgow and attended Hutchesons' Grammar School. She has published 19 novels, all set around Glasgow and featuring the character of Detective Chief Inspector Lorimer and his psychological profiler Solomon Brightman, the earlier novels being published by Canongate and Allison & Busby and later books by Little Brown.
